Apr 29, 2008so a few days ago I tried to install a package of new fonts using font-book. I tried to (stupidly) install something like 1500 fonts at one time, which eventually crashed my machine. When I restarted my computer, it loaded all the way to the desktop where it stalled for like 10mins and then eventually started working OK. Now everytime I restart it, the same thing happens- I get to the desktop and all that loads for the first 10 mins is the little search icon in the top right corner. I tried the restore disks and used the 'store everything in a 'previous system' file' option because I am really trying to avoid a clean erase. I've also tried clearing my cache and doing a nvram clear. Nothing has worked so far. The computer is acting like it is doing a lot of extra work in the background but I can't figure out what. I am tempted to think it might have something to do with some junky fonts I tried to install but that sounds too simple. I am running a g5 Imac on 10.4.11.

I use a linksys router and have AT&T DSL. A lot of times web pages take really long times to load or do't even load at all. Web pages on my windows computer load almost fine.

Jan 28, 2009I recently had to have my Macbook Unibody screen replaced. After they replaced the screen, they forgot to install the airport card. They had to take the computer back and replace the airport card. Now every time I turn on the airport card it literally takes like a minute to find any networks. That doesn't seem like a long time but next time you open your macbook see how long it takes to find networks. What should I do? It doesn't seem to matter how much I'm pasting; I tested it by pasting one word, and pasting a paragraph, and they both took long enough that the spinning wheel came up for several seconds.Â

Jul 1, 2014My MacBook Air (13-inch, mid-2013) takes a long time to connect to any wi-fi network (~ 30 seconds), including known/previously connected ones. Upon wake from sleep, the network will have disconnected and will have to reconnect, again taking about 30 seconds. Also, I notice that even when the display turns off briefly, the network will still disconnect. It does not matter which network it is. However, Power Nap notifications will still show up and be up to date upon wake, suggesting that the disconnection is happening only when I wake the computer.Â

- removing all networks
- toggling wake for wi-fi network access and put hard disks to sleep when possible
- setting Location
- deleting all network system preference files and restarting
- resetting SMC
- restoring OS X Mavericks (10.9.3, clean install) with no recovery of network settingsÂ
MacBook Pro :: Takes Really Long Time To Restart After Battery Drain
May 13, 2012Last night I had a weird experience with my mid-2011 MacBook Pro; I went out to dinner and came back to find the cat had kicked the power cord out, draining the battery. I've had this happen before and wasn't too worried; it's always just restarted after I plugged it back in. This time, however, I plugged it in (getting, perplexingly, a green light on the cord) and nothing happened except for the sleep light slowly flashing; it didn't respond to any pressing on the power button, and the sleep light disappeared if I unplugged the cord. The battery test button on the side got one flashing light (meaning, I believe, a dead battery), which also didn't work if the computer was unplugged.
I left it plugged in while I hunted for info on the problem and about an hour later had just decided that I was going to have to take it in to the Genius Bar when it suddenly booted up. The cord light turned orange and it proceeded to fully recharge over the next two hours. Is this normal behavior after a battery drain? Should I be concerned? Is it worth taking the computer in to get the battery checked, or some other element of the comp? (some of the things I looked at were talking about the logic board, which is not a happy thought) iStat Pro claims the battery is at 41% health, 111 cycles, which I would think would mean it has some life in it yet.

MacBook Air :: Thumb Drive Takes Long Time To Show Up On Desktop?
May 30, 2012I have a thumb drive that if i plug it into my MacBook Air in the left usb port, it takes at least 3 minutes before it shows up on my desktop, sometimes MUCH longer. If i plug it into the right USB port, it shows up after a minute. If I plug this same thumb drive into a PC, it shows up within seconds. If i plug a different thumb drive into either USB port on the Air, it shows up within seconds.Â
It's a FAT32 thumb drive, and i've already tried reformatting it and the same stuff happens. I've even had disk utility check it out and nothing's wrong. I'd guess the thumb drive is bad but it works instantly if i plug it into a PC, so guessing that's not it. It's a 10.6 MacBook Air.

Aug 6, 2010Basically I have a MacBook Pro which logs in fine when I'm at work but when I'm on my home network it takes like 5 minutes to authenticate. All appearances are that it's trying to reach my work network to authenticate. Short of disabling wireless or having it prompt for my home network password before joining wireless, is there any way that I can either shorten the timeout or have it bypass network authentication when I'm at home?

Mar 30, 2012My Mac Pro takes two minutes to start up. It is also sluggish during normal operation. I have Parallels and a external hard drive installed. Do either of these contribute to this problem? Or is there a program that can be used to defrag the hard drive. (I recall having similar problems with my IBM computer. When it was defragged the performance of the unit improved).

OS X :: Since 10.6.3, Ssh W/x11 Forwarding Takes A Long Time To Connect?
Apr 12, 2010I'm not sure if the OS upgrade to 10.6.3 is involved or not, but I've noticed that all of a sudden, ssh connections to my Linux box would take like 30 seconds before I'd get a prompt. I tried lots of different things to resolve the problem, but what finally worked was disabling '-Y', forwarding X11. Can anyone give any insight into this and help me resolve it so that I can forward X11 without the connection taking forever to establish?

Where else I can look what's being executed upon boot? because under process I see BlackBerry's Daemon (I'm no longer BlackBerry user, I'm okay to leave Application, but I don't want it to boot up during startup) and I'm pretty sure there is other stuff as well.

Mar 31, 2009I seem to recall that up until the last several updates it used to be OK, but ever since it takes around 30 seconds or more for firefox to quit.
Even when I clear out caches, it still does it. I have no idea. I mean, Safari quit immediately, as does pretty much everything else. No biggie, just annoying.
Any ideas besides firefox sucks?

Apr 23, 2012my computer takes too much time to boot or reboot after switching to Lion, additionally I found out that there are duplications to the applications I am using so 2 Application Support folders and so on, means also wasting space of hd but probably long booting time is caused by that as well.Â
After searching a bit I found that this is a users issue, but since I am the only user I don't think this is necessary to have, so is it ok to delete and how the users option.

Jul 23, 2009currently using a mid 09 13' Macbook Pro with 4gb of ram. Currently i have a Western Digital 1TB My Book External Hard Drive connected to the usb port. But everytime i try to access the ext hdd, there will be the dreaded beach ball ands takes around 3-5mins before the files can be displayed on finder. I never had this problem when it is plugged into my windows PC. My ext hard disk is currently formated in NTFS, im accessing the files through my mac using NTFS-3G. Could this be a reason?

Why is my Mac battery draining so fast?
There can be a number of reasons. For example, different browsers consume different amounts of battery power.

In some cases, a recent upgrade to a new macOS can be the cause and therefore a temporary problem. It either stops doing this in its own time, or a new macOS patch/upgrade is sent through and once downloaded the problem goes away. It is known to happen around the time of new releases and is an issue many Mac owners anticipate.
However, in other cases, the issue is less widespread and more localized. We cover five of the most common problems and fixes for Mac users, in particular MacBook owners who have suffered from a fast draining battery.
5 solutions for Mac battery problems
1. Check and change Battery Settings
In the top menu, where the battery appears, it’s always useful to switch usage to a statistics setting, so that you can clearly see how fast it's draining.
If you click on the battery, it will show which apps are using the most amount of power.
- From here, click on Open Energy Saver Preferences
- Within this you’ve got the option to put the hard disks to sleep and dim the display when a Mac is not connected to power.
2. Switch on Energy Saver
Always useful when trying to conserve battery power on any device, and it could be a lifesaver if you happen to be out without a power cord or plug.
- From the Apple menu;
- Go to System Preferences > Energy Saver
- Now click on the Battery tab
- A slider should be on this screen: Switch Power Nap off, while sliding the scale along to ensure the screen goes dark after a reasonable amount of time when not being used, which should reduce battery drainage.
3. Find out what is using energy
When investigating a fast draining battery, it’s always useful to know what is using energy in the first place. To find out, follow these steps:
- Go to Applications;
- Click on Utilities > Activity Monitor;
- Activity Monitor will show what is taking up CPU and GPU;
- Giving you the ability to close anything that is clearly taking up too much battery power.
4. Identify background apps
Behind the scenes, most Macs can run dozens of apps without us realizing it. Some of these could be running because we forgot about them. Others open during the startup sequence. And others, without us knowing it, could be malware or ransomware, or other viruses, either designed to steal data or steal processing power to mine cryptocurrency or even run remote DDoS attacks.
Now, clearly that sort of thing isn’t ideal and you won’t want apps running that drain power, steal data, or that use your Mac for something you aren't even aware. To solve these potential battery draining problems, we recommend taking the following steps:
- Download CleanMyMac X (for free, here)
- Click on Uninstaller
- It will run a scan of every app on your system: Either click to rest or safely uninstall everything you don't need or aren't aware of.
Also, click the Optimization tab in CleanMyMac. You’ll find the tool called Launch Agents.
It displays tiny background applications otherwise non visible to a user. This very often gets exploited by advertising scripts — a sure way to drain your battery power.
As you can see, these items can be easily switched off using the Disable button.
5. Adjust screen brightness
The brightest lightbulbs consume more energy, same is true for your screen's lighting. In your Preferences, look up Displays settings and do a couple of tune-ups there. Make sure to tick 'Automatically adjust brightness' checkbox.
6. Clean up your Mac
Macs battery benefits from various forms of cleaning. Why? Because the cluttered hard drive uses more CPU resources. The more strain on CPU, the more it affects and eventually wears off your battery. There are dozens of pretty good tools to remove hidden junk from Mac but my personal favorite is CleanMyMac X. It's so enjoyable to use even for such a trivial operation as deleting junk files.

As you can see, I was able to remove 18.9 GB worth of useless files: caches, broken downloads, localizations, etc.
